M/V “SEA CROSS”
12/11/01 – 22/11/01
Off Salamina Island near Piraeus (Greece)
Grounding – Refloating/Lightering services
The cargo carrier “Sea Cross” laden with phosphate ran aground off Selinia (Salamina), on the rocky islet of Mermigia. Adverse weather conditions were putting the vessel in grave danger of breaking up as her hull from frame No 1 to No 60 was aground leaving her aft moving up and down. Her double bottoms No 1, 3 and 6 were flooded. After discharging cargo from CH No 1 and pressurizing double bottoms, pumping out fuels and sea water and patching all visible cracks with steel plates, the vessel was refloated and safely towed to Perama Roads. Further lightering works with the assistance of hydraulic pick axe JCB for the breaking up of the hardened wet cargo, pumping and patching up were carried out. She was safely redelivered to her owners in ten days.
