13/3/08 – 22/3/08
North off Poros Island (Platia Islet) – Greece
Grounding – Salvage Operation under LOF dd 13.03.08
With 300 passengers onboard including her crew, the “GIORGIS” passenger vessel, ran aground on Platia Islet on March 13th, 2008. The passengers were safely evacuated the vessel, with the assistance of the port authorities and vessel’s lifeboats. Operating under LOF 2000 agreement, POSEIDON responded with a salvage team, divided into two shifts, working on a 24hour basis and specialized salvage gear including two tug boats & a crane barge with hydraulic pullers mounted on board (total pollard pull 250tons). Further to a detailed on-site assessment of the condition of the vessel, a salvage plan was submitted for approval. All fuels, lubricants and slops were safely removed from the vessel and temporarily stored in the tanks of the OIL DEBRIS SKIMMER VESSEL “POSEIDON IV” for later delivery to reception facilities. Once the salvage plan was approved by the authorities, POSEIDON successfully refloated the vessel which was then shifted it to a safe anchorage nearby Poros Port for temporary repairs. The vessel was safely redelivered under tow to her owners in Piraeus, on March 22nd 2008, thereby successfully concluding the salvage services.
