Itea - Cape Psaromita (Greece)
Grounding – Refloating Operation under ‘SALVHIRE 2005’ dd 04/01/08
Whilst sailing from Varna (Bulgaria) to Vastoport (Italy), the laden M/V ‘’SAIL’’ grounded on Psaromita cape in the Corinthian Gulf, off Itea Port on January 1st. The vessel ran aground on a rocky shore with her end bottom laying aground over a length of approx. 87m and breadth of max. 3m. As a result, her STRBD bilge keel was heavily damaged while her end bottom sustained many cracks and bending from fore to aft (until engine room area). Following failed refloating attempts by her crew, POSEIDON was contracted under “SALVHIRE 2005” agreement by her owners & managers MESSRS “PERSEY SHIPPING” for the refloating operation. POSEIDON swiftly mobilized two tugs, the MOTHER VESSEL “VERGINA I” and her fully qualified diving team at the casualty, arriving on January 5th. Further to a video-recorded inspection that was performed to ascertain the damage, a refloating plan was handed over to the authorities for approval. The refloating operation started on January 6th noon and completed successfully in one hour time with the assistance of the two tugboats. Once afloat, the vessel was shifted under tow to a safe nearby anchorage where temporary repairs to her class surveyor and authorities’ satisfaction were carried out. The vessel was safely delivered to her owners on January 11th at same place.
