Grounding - Refloating Operation
As a result of a severe storm, the Greek owned Ro/Ro “ARION” ARION’ laden with a cargo of trucks, trailers and cars ran aground at Chios Island during a severe storm on 11 February 2005. POSEIDON, in association with TSAVLIRIS, mobilized on site a large array of salvage means including salvage tugs, floating cranes and other specialized equipment such as underwater hydraulic excavator in order to refloat the semi-sunken vessel. Salvage team pumped out flooded water from the engine room, de laval, void tanks, pump room and after peak. For her refloating it was necessary to further lighten the vessel by means of cutting off 1800tons steel plates of the bow and deck. Underwater services for the patching of the severely damage at bottom as well as scouring services with the use of the underwater hydraulic track-mounted excavator and pressurizing were carried out in order to assist her in gaining the lost buoyancy. The operation was successfully competed within 55 days and the vessel was delivered undertow to a scrap yard in Turkey.
