Date | : | 24/2/08 – 8/3/08 |
Place | : | Amvrakikos Gulf, West coast of Greece |
Project | : | Removal & Clearance of three fishing farms of 1000 tons approx. dead fishes |
Approx.1000tons of fishes died on February 2008 in three different fishing farms located in Amvrakikos Gulf near Menidi Port due to cold sea currents. As they posed a threat to the local sea environment, there was an urgent need for their removal. Appointed directly by the prefecture government, POSEIDON undertook the project for the collection, removal from the cages & safe disposal of this great amount of dead fishes (5 millions approx.). Several specialized gear, such as dredging pump and other pumps of great capacity, was mobilized while especially made nets were used for their removal from approx. 100 cages. Works were carried out on an almost 24hrs basis. In spite of the adverse weather conditions encountered and the deep water working conditions, the clearing of the three fishing farms was successfully concluded within 12 days without any impact to the sensitive local sea environment and to the full satisfaction of all parties involved.
